# Best Time for a Maternity Photoshoot: Which Week & Month Is Ideal?

One of the first questions expecting parents ask before booking is:

**“When should we do our maternity photoshoot?”**

Too early, and you may feel that your baby bump isn’t as visible as you’d like.

Wait too long, and you may feel less comfortable walking, changing outfits or spending time outdoors.

For many pregnancies, a practical maternity photography window is around **28 to 34 weeks**, roughly during the seventh and eighth months. During this period, the bump is generally clearly visible while many mothers are still comfortable enough for a relaxed photography session.

But there isn’t one perfect week for every pregnancy.

At **Memories by TK Solanki**, we prefer planning the session around the mother—not forcing the mother to fit the photoshoot.

## What Is the Best Week for a Maternity Photoshoot?

For many expecting mothers:

### 28–34 Weeks: The Common Sweet Spot

This is a popular maternity photography window because it often provides a good balance between:

- Clearly visible baby bump
- Comfortable movement
- Easier posing
- Outfit changes
- Short walks
- Couple and family portraits
- Enough time before the expected delivery date

Current maternity-photography guidance commonly recommends approximately **28–34 weeks** for these reasons.

If you’re planning an outdoor maternity photoshoot in Diu, this balance becomes particularly useful because beaches may involve some walking, wind, sand and changing weather.

---

## Is 7 Months a Good Time for Maternity Photos?

Yes, the seventh month can be an excellent time for many mothers.

At this stage, the bump may already be nicely defined while you may still find it comfortable to:

Walk slowly on the beach.

Stand for portraits.

Sit and change positions.

Create photographs with your partner.

Change an outfit if required.

This can be especially useful if you’re planning a **beach maternity photoshoot**, where comfort and mobility matter more than they would in a controlled indoor environment.

---

## Is 8 Months Too Late for a Maternity Shoot?

Not necessarily.

The eighth month is actually a popular period for maternity photographs.

The bump is prominent and can create beautiful profile photographs and silhouettes.

However, there’s a big difference between:

**“8 months”**

and

**“I should wait until the last possible week.”**

As pregnancy progresses, comfort, energy and mobility can change.

That’s why we don’t recommend delaying only because you want the bump to look slightly larger.

A comfortable mother at 31 weeks will often have a better photography experience than someone who waited much later and no longer enjoys standing, walking or changing outfits.

---

## Can You Do a Maternity Photoshoot Before 28 Weeks?

Absolutely.

28 weeks isn’t a rule.

An earlier session can make sense if:

- Your bump is already clearly visible
- You’re expecting twins or multiples
- You’re travelling later
- Your doctor has advised limiting activity later
- You feel more energetic now
- Your schedule won’t allow a later shoot
- You simply prefer an earlier stage of pregnancy

Photography guidelines for multiple pregnancies commonly suggest considering an earlier window because the bump may show sooner and comfort needs can change earlier.

The photograph doesn’t know whether you were exactly 28 weeks pregnant.

What matters is that **you feel ready to document this chapter.**

---

## What If You’re Expecting Twins?

Consider planning earlier rather than assuming the standard timeline will suit you.

Photography guidance often places twin or multiple-pregnancy maternity sessions earlier than singleton sessions—for example, around the mid-to-late second trimester or early third trimester.

But this is where photography advice should stop and medical advice should begin.

Your obstetrician or healthcare professional knows your pregnancy.

If you’re expecting twins, have pregnancy complications, have been advised to limit activity, or are unsure about travelling for a photoshoot, discuss the plan with your healthcare professional first.

We can always adapt the photography around what is comfortable and appropriate for you.

---

## Is 35–36 Weeks Too Late for Maternity Photos?

No.

If you’re feeling well and your healthcare professional has no concerns about your planned activity or travel, beautiful maternity photographs can still be created later.

But we’d change the way we plan the session.

Instead of:

**Three locations + long walks + multiple outfits**

we might choose:

**One accessible location + one or two outfits + shorter session + more breaks.**

Later maternity sessions can still work; they simply benefit from a gentler pace and greater flexibility.

---

## Don’t Wait for the “Perfect” Bump

This is one mistake we would avoid.

Couples sometimes keep postponing:

**“One more week.”**

Then:

**“Maybe another week—the bump will look better.”**

And suddenly you’re very close to the due date.

The purpose of maternity photography isn’t to achieve the largest possible baby bump.

It’s to photograph this stage while you can still enjoy being photographed.

---

## When Should You Book Your Photographer?

Don’t wait until week 28 to start searching.

Ideally, begin planning during your second trimester.

This gives you time to:

- Choose your photographer
- Discuss the visual style
- Select the location
- Plan outfits
- Arrange makeup
- Coordinate your partner
- Plan travel/stay if coming to Diu
- Keep some flexibility for weather or schedule changes

Some maternity photographers recommend reserving the session during the second trimester even though the actual shoot happens later.

For destination-style maternity photography, earlier planning is even more useful because accommodation and travel may also be involved.

---

## Best Time of Day for an Outdoor Maternity Photoshoot

The pregnancy week is only one part of timing.

The **time of day** matters too.

### Early Morning

A sunrise or early-morning session can give you:

- Softer light
- Potentially quieter locations
- Cooler conditions
- Fresh energy
- Cleaner beach backgrounds

This can work beautifully for maternity photographs in Diu.

### Late Afternoon

Another strong option.

We normally want to begin **before** golden hour rather than arriving exactly at sunset.

This gives us time to settle in and create portraits without rushing.

### Golden Hour

The softer light around the end of the day can work beautifully for:

- Beach maternity portraits
- Couple photographs
- Flowing dresses
- Silhouettes
- Family portraits

But don’t plan the complete session only around the final few minutes of sunset.

---

## What About a Summer Maternity Photoshoot?

If your ideal pregnancy window falls during hot weather, don’t postpone the session by several weeks simply to chase better weather.

Change the shoot plan instead.

For example:

**Early morning outdoor shoot**

or

**Hotel/indoor portraits + short evening beach session**

can be much more comfortable than spending hours outdoors.

Heat and humidity are especially important considerations during pregnancy, so comfort, shade, hydration and rest should be built into the plan.

---

## What If It Rains on Your Shoot Date?

This is another reason to avoid scheduling at the very last moment.

If you’re planning an outdoor maternity shoot and weather changes, having some flexibility makes rescheduling easier.

Alternatively, create a backup plan:

**Hotel Room → Resort → Covered Location → Another Date**

Don’t force an outdoor shoot in uncomfortable conditions just because everything was booked for that date.

---

## Morning or Sunset: Which Is Better?

Neither is automatically better.

### Choose Morning If:

You prefer quieter surroundings.

You feel more energetic earlier in the day.

The weather is warmer later.

You want a soft, peaceful beach look.

### Choose Sunset If:

You love warmer evening light.

You want romantic couple photographs.

You prefer a slower afternoon preparation.

You want sunset silhouettes.

Choose according to **your energy + season + location + visual style**.

---

## How Long Should a Maternity Photoshoot Be?

A longer photoshoot isn’t necessarily a better photoshoot.

Especially during pregnancy.

A well-planned session with:

**one or two outfits,**

**one accessible location,**

and

**beautiful light**

can create a complete maternity gallery without exhausting you.

If we add your partner, children, multiple outfits or video coverage, we can allow additional time while keeping regular breaks.

---

## The Best Time Is When You Still Feel Like Yourself

Weeks matter.

Light matters.

Weather matters.

But maternity photography shouldn’t become a technical calculation.

If you’re comfortable, your bump is visible and your healthcare professional is happy with your planned activity, that’s more important than chasing one supposedly perfect date.

For many mothers, **28–34 weeks is a useful starting window**.

Then we personalise from there.
